Senior softball World Series

Texas shocks Haverstraw, 3-1 with two runs in seventh to win World Series title

    Tony Pinciaro

ROXANA, De. -- Haverstraw's current core group of six began its tremendous little league run four years ago.
In 2007, Vittoria Adams, Taylor Corretjer, Michelle Hoppe, Destiney Jones, Briana Rivera and Samantha Wangenstein were all members of the Haverstraw Junior team that played in the World Series and finished fourth. This was only the beginning.
They would go on to win two senior state championships, including this year's title, and play in two Senior World Series. Yesterday, the "Super Six" completed their little league careers with a major achievement.
Haverstraw became the first Rockland County softball team to play for a World Series when it met Northside Suburban Little League of San Antonio, Tx at Lower Sussex Little League. The teams engaged in a pitchers' dual as Adams and Northside's Hennessy Soto were both masterful.
The game was even through six innings and appeared to be headed for extra innings, but Northside capitalized on an errant throw to score the go-ahead run in the seventh for an eventual 3-1 victory and the championship.
The shock and disbelief of the final outcome brought out Haverstraw's collective emotions, but it was quite understandable. Haverstraw manager Joe Corretjer spoke to the team and once the discussion concluded, the girls wiped away the moisture in their eyes and smiles returned to their faces.
"When you've been playing together as a team, for so long, as the six of us have, words can't explain what it's been like," Rivera said. "This was the best year of my life."
"I wouldn't have wanted to experience this with any other people," said Adams of the four years with her fellow veterans. "All of them are amazing."
During the post-game ceremonies, Haverstraw was awarded the second-place trophy. Adams was given the tall, large trophy and she led her teammates toward the cheering Haverstraw fans for pictures.
Adams scattered eight hits, struck out two and only allowed one earned run. Adams opened the seventh inning with two quick strikes on Northside's Britney Ramos. However, Ramos fouled off two pitches, took consecutive balls, evening the county at 2-2, before fouling off yet another Adams offering. Rivera called for a changeup, but Ramos waited on it and drove a single to left field. Felicia Sanchez fouled off a first pitch, that just eluded Taylor Corretjer's glove in left field, near the ESPN camera bay. Corretjer, who was shading Sanchez to her left, made a long, mad dash toward the foul ball. Sanchez bunted the next pitch, moving Ramos to second.
Alexandra Losoyo flied out to Olivia D'Amelio in left field, bringing up Gabrielle Winkler, who owned a run-scoring single in the fifth to tie the score. Adams got Winkler to hit a ground ball, but the errant throw allowed Ramos to score. Jasmine Rosser was inserted as a pinch runner for Winkler, and she scored on Ryler Moreno's single.
Joe Corretjer immediately said, "The game did not come down to one play. We had out opportunities and we just didn't cash them in."
After Rivera singled in Taylor Corretjer, who had doubled, in the third inning, Soto yielded just two hits the remainder of the game -- to Sam Wangenstein and Jen Salomon. Soto also pitched out of some tricky situations.
In the fifth inning, Havertsraw had runners on second and third with two out, but Soto got the dangerous Jones to ground out. In the sixth inninig, Wangenstein led off with an infield hit and Adams walked, but Soto retired Salomon and the two Olivias -- Ancin and D'Amelio -- to end the threat.
"She (Soto) wa working corners," Rivera said. "She would start outside and come in or she would start in and go out. She was an excellent pitcher."
Northside manager Joseph Losoya had a good feeling for his pitcher when he noticed the home-plate umpire also called balls and strikes in Northside's semi-final win over South Bend, Indian (Central).
"We wanted Hennessey to hit her spots and stay inside because it worked last night (Friday) against Central and this was the same umpire, Losoyo said.
Losoyo cited Ramos' at bat as a factor in scoring, especially after she got the hit.
"We knew Britney had it in her to be a hitter with two strikes on her," Losoyo said. "Britney ssat back on the change up, saw it early and got the bat head through. That was big."
Joe Corretjer met with his team one more time, after the post-game ceremony, and reiterated they should be proud of what they accomplished.
"At the beginning of the season I think we were a little nervous because we needed to fill some spots," Rivera said. "We didn't know how long it would take for it come together, but it did and I couldn't be any more prouder of the new girls, who stepped up for us.

Haverstraw to play San Antonio, Texas, today, for the Senior World Series title
Corretjer tosses six hitter, strikes out four; Wagenstein has three hits, two RBI

LOWER SUSSEX, De. -- The last time Haverstraw played ASOFEM Little League of Puerto Rico, the champion from Latin America defeated the District 18 titlist in the 2007 Little League Junior softball World Series in Portland.
ASOFEM Little League was Haverstraw's opponent once again, yesterday, as the teams met for a berth in the Little League Senior softball World Series. However, this time it was Haverstraw who had the final word.
Samantha Wangenstein had three hits and two RBI as Haverstraw collected 11 hits in a 5-2 victory over ASOFEM of Puerto Rico in a semifinal.
Haverstraw will play Northside Suburban Little League of San Antonio, Tx. (Southwest) for the championship today, 11 a.m. on Bruce E. Layton Field. Southwest defeated Central (South Bend, Indiana) in the other semifinal.
Taylor Corretjer threw a six-hitter and struck out four. Puerto Rico had three of its hits in the seventh inning when it scored its second run. Puerto Rico had the bases loaded with one out, but Corretjer induced the next two batters to ground into unassisted force outs to shortstop Olivia Ancin.
"The girls are glad to be playing," said Haverstraw manager Joe Corretjer of his team's title-game berth. "The girls have worked hard for this."
The teams traded runs in the first inning with Haverstraw scoring in its first at-bat. With one out, Michelle Hoppe singled and stole second. She was not there for long as Brianna Rivera roped a single to score Hoppe.
Haverstraw's youngsters started a fifth-inning rally. Brittany Escribano, pinch-hitting for Ancin, drew a lead-off walk. Corretjer re-entered Ancin as a special pinch runner. Erica Desch, another pinch hitter, sacrificed Ancin to second base. Taylor Corretjer stepped in and drilled a double, chasing Ancin home to give Haverstraw a 2-1 lead. Hoppe was safe on an error and with two outs, Haverstraw came through once again.
Destiney Jones doubled in Hoppe and Wangenstein singled in Jones to cap the three-run uprising. Wangenstein would add another two-out hit to score a run, in the seventh as Hoppe crossed home for a third time.
In its win over Central, Jones and Wangenstein had consecutive two-out RBI hits in a three-run third inning and Taylor Corretjer added a two-out run-scoring hit in the sixth inning.
"We have alot of players who, on any given day, can be the offensive star," Joe Corretjer said. "Sam has been been getting the big hits when we need them.
"Taylor did a good job in the circle. She was throwing hard and was effective. Puerto Rico is a strong hitting team and they hit the ball hard, but our defense was solid behind Taylor today."
Vittoria Adams, who will get the ball today in the final, went 2 for 3.

Senior softball World Series

Haverstraw hits its way into the World Series semifinals with a 5-2 win over Central
Jones drives in two runs, Adams strikes out seven

LOWER SUSSEX, De. -- The equation for Haverstraw was simple entering its final pool-play game yesterday.
A win would qualify Haverstraw for the Little League Senior softball World Series semifinals while a loss would end its season. To compound the situation, Haverstraw was playing South Bend, Indiana (Central), which was undefeated and had scored 40 runs in its three games.
Haverstraw was ready for the challenge and responded with an excellent all-around game in a 5-2 win over Central.
As a result of its victory, Haverstraw qualified for the semifinals and earned the No. 1 seed. Haverstraw will play the Latin American representative, ASOFEM Little League of Maunaba, Puerto Rico tonight, 5:30 p.m. ASOFEM finished second in its pool. The other semi, at 8 p.m., will be Central playing the Southwest champ, Northside Suburban Little League of San Antonio, Tx. The winners meet in the championship game tomorrow, 11 a.m.
Haverstraw, Central and the host team, Laurel, De., all finished with 3-1 records in their pool, but Haverstraw received a semi-final berth and No. 1 seed based on its run differential. Haverstraw scored 24 runs, but allowed only three.
"Central has been drilling everyone," Haverstraw manager Joe Corretjer said. "They have good pitching and outstanding hitting. In all of my years coaching, they are one of the best hitting teams I've ever face."
Vittoria Adams took care of the Central lineup, scattering five hits and striking out seven. Meanwhile, Haverstraw displayed its offensive capabilities, pounding out 12 hits, including three apiece by Taylor Corretjer and Jen Salomon. Destiney Jones collected two hits and drove in two runs, both coming with two outs and with two-strike counts.
"Our girls wanted it and they went out and took it," Corretjer said.
Haverstraw took a 3-0 lead with three runs in the third inning. Taylor Corretjer smoked a one-out triple and scored on a Michelle Hoppe single. Following a fielder's choice, Jones doubled home Brianna Rivera and Samantha Wangenstein plated Jones with a single.
Central closed to within one run, at 3-2, with its runs in the top of the fifth. Adams faced a difficult spot as Central had runners on second and third with two outs, but she struck out the clean-up hitter to end the threat.
Haverstraw answered with a run in its half of the fifth as Hoppe singled and, after a fielder's choice, Jones singled in Rivera. Taylor Corretjer singled with two outs in the sixth inning to chase home Salomon, who led off with a base hit.
"Vittoria made the big pitches when she had to," Corretjer said. "I am proud of our hitting. We knew we had to put the pressure on them and we were able to keep the pressure on them the whole game.
"On the two-out hits, the girls did a great job of waiting for their pitch. When they had two strikes, they stayed back and were able to get the sweet spot through the zone and on the ball."

Senior softball World Series

Adams silences Guam's bats in 7-0 Haverstraw win

Winning pitcher strikes out 10, Jones drives in three runs

LOWER SUSSEX, De., -- Vittoria Adams has been quite stingy of late.

The Haverstraw windmiller has been the opposition's worst nightmare, allowing just one run in in her last 15 innings, spanning three games.

Adams increased her scoreless streak to the current number with a six-hitter and 10 strikeouts yesterday as Haverstraw shut out Guam District 1 (Asia Pacific) in pool play at the Little League Senior softball World Series.

Haverstraw is now 2-1 through three games. It will have the day off today before resuming tomorrow, 5:30 p.m., against South Bend, Indiana (Central). Haverstraw needs to beat South Bend in order to have a chance at semi-final berth. South Bend and Laurel (De.), both 2-0, will play tonight, 8 p.m.

Destiney Jones had an excellent game offensively and defensively, according to Haverstraw manager Joe Corretjer. Jones singled in Taylor Corretjer in the first inning and added a two-run single in the fifth.

Defensively, Joe Corretjer said Jones ran down a ball in the left-center-field gap, threw the relay to Taylor Corretjer and she unleashed home, to Brianna Rivera, to get the baserunner trying to score, in the sixth inning. In the seventh inning, Jones snared a sinking line drive and doubled the baserunner off of first to punctuate the game.

"Guam is a good-hitting team," Joe Corretjer said. "A couple of their hits were on changeups that I called. Usually, Brianna calls the entire game."

Michelle Hoppe went 2 for 3, Jen Salomon singled and scored in the second inning and Samantha Wangenstein singled and drove in a run.

Senior softball World Series

Haverstraw rebounds behind Corretjer, offense over Europe

Corretjer strikes out 10 in 12-0 win

LOWER SUSSEX, De., -- Taylor Corretjer struck out 10 in four innings and allowed one hit as Haverstraw defeated Eupore, 12-0 in pool play of the Little League Senior softball World Series at Connie Mack Field.

The game was stopped after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule. Haverstraw will play Guam District 1 Little League (Asia Pacific) tonight, 8 p.m. on Connie Mack Field. The East Regional champs need a win in order to stay in the hunt for a final-four berth. Haverstraw closes pool play with undefeated South Bend, Indiana (Central) Thursday, 5:30 p.m.

Haaverstraw jumped on KMC American Little League (Ramstein Base, Germany) with eight runs in the first inning. This came one day after the host, Laurel, De., blanked Haverstraw, 1-0.

Corretjer drew a lead-off walk and Michelle Hoppe was hit by a pitch.. The runners advanced on a double steal and scored on a Brianna Rivera single. Samantha Wangenstein would bring Rivera in with a single. After Vittoria Adams and Olivia Ancin reached base, they came in on an Olvia D'Amelio single.

Wangenstein scored three runs, Rivera added a second hit and Erica Desch singled for Haverstraw's fifth hit.

Corretjer only allowed a Kelsey Freeman single in the first inning. The North Rockland senior-to-be has allowed no runs in her last seven innings, spanning two games.

"Havint 10 strikeouts in four innings, you can't ask for anything more than that," Haverstraw manager Joe Corretjer said. "They were not catching up to her fastball."

While Corretjer was throwing smoke, the manager was pleased with his team's patience, especially in the first inning when the opposing pitcher struggled with her control.

"Early in the count, our hitters are looking for a pitch in a certain zone," Joe Corretjer said. "When their pitcher was wild, they shouldn't have been fishing and they were not."

Senior Softball World Series

Laurel (De.) stuns Haverstraw, 1-0 in opening Senior World Series game

LOWER SUSSEX, De. -- Vittoria Adams tossed a four-hitter and struck out six, but it was Laurel (De.) shocking Haverstraw, 1-0 in the opening game of the Little League Senior softball World Series at Bruce E. Layton Field.

Haverstraw will play KMC American Little League of Ramstein Air Base, Germany, representing Europe/Middle East/Africa. This will be a 10 a.m. game on Connie Mack Field.

The host team scored an unearned run in the second inning on a Kristen Collins single, an error and RBI single by Allison Pusey.

Laurel pitcher Logan Green allowed three hits, all after the fourth inning, and struck out five. Green had a perfect game through the first 4 2/3 innings. Taylor Corretjer, Destiney Jones and Adams had Haverstraw's hits, all coming after two were out.

"We were hitting the ball, but we were not hitting the ball consistently," Haverstraw manager Joe Corretjer said. "All of our hits were with two outs. We were not putting any pressure on them.

"I give them credit though, we hit a few balls in the gaps and they ran them down."

This was Haverstraw's first loss since the all-star season began. Corretjer spoke to the girls after the game and they realize what they have to do.

"We are still in this, but now we have to take care of our end," Corretjer said. "I think we may have come out a little tight. We need to play a little more loose."

The 10-team field, which is divided into two pools of five, will play games through Thursday, Aug. 12. The semifinals will be held Friday, Aug. 13, at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Haverstraw is grouped with Laurel (De.), South Bend, Indiana (Central), Guam District 1 (Asia Pacific) and KMC American Little League, Ramstein Air Base, Germany (Eurpoe/Middle East/Africa).

The other group consists of Olive Branch, Va. (Southeast), Northside Suburban, San Antonio, Tx. (Southwest), Sunnyside, Tuscon, Az. (West), Turtle Club, Windsor, Ontario (Canada) and ASOFEM, Maunabo, Puerto Rico (Latin America).
